The Writer's Workshop: what do users think?

Jan Field: I’ve really enjoyed doing the assignments in this course, trying out techniques, and getting feedback. Having my writing supported/critiqued was a highlight. I’ve learned to think deeper into a subject, and my revisions are more fun and creative. I’m fascinated by the depth that can be brought to a piece.I write a lot of family-history short stories as the family ‘story-keeper’. This course is really helping me to do the revisions which I had previously avoided. Now it's exciting because I'm able to look at the piece with new eyes thanks to Nick's instruction and feedback in this course. I highly recommend taking the course and going on the journey!

Mark Seattle: Nick is an excellent instructor and guide for aspiring writers, and writers looking to improve their skills and the quality of their work. He breaks down the writing process into understandable segments, and takes the class through them, assisting each student with their personal projects. I have completed a number of his classes, my work is much better, and I look forward to continuing to work with Nick.

Andrea Peer: Nick is an excellent teacher and writer! I really enjoyed his class. I grew a lot in my writing skills and feel more confident in how to pursue publication. I highly recommend his classes!

Beth Dotolo: I loved this workshop and have just signed up for my 2nd course! It was informative and engaging. It's great for writers starting out or slightly more seasoned writers. Nick's teaching style is kind and encouraging while being direct and critical. It was an outstanding balance of instruction, individual feedback, and peer review. I found Nick's critiques invaluable and he takes the time to give good feedback on every assignment. I have also met people in the class that I will stay in touch with as I continue my writing journey. 10/10 reccomend!

Laura Monahan: Nick is a great teacher, covering a lot of material but being careful to keep the class engaged. The class had enough assignments to motivate, without being overwhelming. The format with lecture, lots of time for Q/A, and plenty of smaller group sessions felt nice and balanced. I really enjoyed the fall session and met fellow writers I’ll be for sure keeping in touch with!

Mohini Dasari: I cannot recommend Nick and his classes enough - I am already eagerly awaiting the start of the next class with him! As a teacher, he is insightful and truly cares about his students, that is so clear. He takes the time to get to know you as a writer and a person and what you are trying to achieve. The classes are both instructional and inspirational and I derived so much benefit from feedback both from Nick and my peers. He offers feedback on assignments on a weekly basis and the feedback is constructive and individualized. Overall I feel that I got so much out of the course and more and am very motivated to take more classes; I feel it has already fundamentally helped me grow as a writer and definitely for the better. 10/10 recommend!!!

Lisa Goldsmith: from rough first draft to actually realizing the possibility of being published. Nick is an expert and a wizard instructor as he shares his knowledge and empowers student participants.

Caroline Poole: Excellent class that greatly helped my writing. Not only was I able to outline and write an entire new chapter, I was able to polish it and make it shine with the help of the instructor, Nick and my classmates. I feel this class has helped see the whole world more poetically. I would recommend this class to anyone tackling a new writing project or looking to grow as a person. I have already signed up for the next class this fall!

Allie Jones: 10/10. Nick is a wonderful, encouraging teacher. He's thoughtful + practical. I felt safe and excited to write in this class. Nick inspired me to continue writing and re-writing. It was so wonderful to meet and learn from the classmates as well. Would absolutely recommend this class to anyone on a journey to improve their writing.

Mara Baker: Just wanted to add my piece to the bevy of positive reviews already here - Nick's spring class was well structured, with each meeting focusing on a specific step in the process of writing a story. Everyone in the class got one-on-one time with Nick to discuss their work, which was very helpful for the process, and showed that Nick genuinely cares about providing guidance for his students.I really look forward to taking another class with Nick and would highly recommend his classes for anyone interested in writing!

Lucy Arenberg: I look forward to his summer workshop. I highly recommend Nick and his writing workshops👍👍👍

Stella Raedeker: I recently took the Spring class, "The Nature of Narrative." It was a blend of theoretical instruction and a supportive read-and-critique atmosphere. The assignments are by no means "busy work," and will actually help you flesh out your story.Nick O'Connell is a great instructor, and will offer useful insights into your project, no matter the genre. He is familiar with all aspects of writing, editing, publishing, and promotion.

Sara Stifler: A college-level education for a fraction of the cost, great engagement and insight, holistic approach to not just how to write, but how to be a writer professionally. Just finished my first course, Spring semester, and have already enrolled in another one!

Erin Michael Grimm: I don't follow all the directions, but will always be taking classes from Nick because he thinks like a writer, is a successful writer, and, most importantly, teaches his students to think like writers, too!My first book was just published and I have two new book deals! With Nick's help, my books will be even more successful!

Laura LeDoux: Nick is a great instructor and gives really practical suggestions to help me become a better writer. He is encouraging every step of the way, and takes the time to help me understand the best approach and next steps.

A GC: Writing can be a difficult endeavor and Nick's talent for breaking it down into manageable parts is what I appreciated most. His encouraging words and kind disposition help ease my trepidations. Plus the added bonus of meeting other wonderful aspiring writers made the class most enjoyable. If you're ready to take the leap - Nick's workshop will make sure your writer's parachute opens.

Linda Smith: Nick O'Connell has a special talent for gauging the best trajectory in a story and lights the way there with wisdom and humor. His classes make me hungry for more. Take the ride, you won't regret it!Linda Smith

Ares Fisher: I'm really glad I took this class! Nick is very knowledgeable and systematically takes you to the marrow of what makes writing good. He was very supportive and gave me detailed feedback on my assignments. The structured group critique sessions were also very helpful, and altogether the course helped me overcome my imposter syndrome with writing. Highly recommend!

Nancy Stone: Nick is a wonderful instructor- I learned so much in this course and it really inspired me to write more, and pushed me out of my comfort zone. An unexpected addition was that it made me a better reader and made reading more enjoyable, which has in turn, made me a better writer, too. I look forward to taking more of these courses, and can't recommend this workshop enough!

Diana Ismail: Nick is incredible, kind, and very knowledgable in his craft. He's available whenever you need him, and if you're a newbie you can ask questions in the class without feeling embarrassed. He also gives critical feedback in your writing without being harsh. This class is fun and you will learn something!

General Assembly Seattle: what do users think?

Marcel N: I've just taken intro classes in my spare time over a couple years. Love the business model that General Assembly has! The intro classes are very in depth for a short session. I just came from the cannabis panel they hosted and I'm shocked nobody took advantage of this profession event! When I finish my college degree, I'd very much like to take on the full classes at GA

Anastasia Tavare: free info sessions to get to know the curriculum and people there. I wasn't disappointed at all. Check out their info session or networking events, even if you don't think you need to attend the classes they offer. Honestly, anyone can get at least something out of any event the GA puts on. Get your learning on and check out an event!!!

Helen Ell Tran: They have free introduction to classes at night time and hosted the Google Sprint here. It was great.

ExcelMandarin: what do users think?

Theophilus Ko: and nothing was more effective in getting me up to a comfortable level than this program. This course taught me solid fundamentals that allow me to speak very comfortably to native speakers using everyday conversational language. For example in a typical day I might talk about my opinions on something, how I’m feeling, what I plan to do, etc - and all of this would now be totally fine using mandarin. I also noticed the value of this course kicking in when I did a trip to China and Taiwan

Daniel Crowe: Excel Mandarin is definitely one of the more productive classes out there. I was initially unsure about a class over zoom, but it turned out to be convenient and feel natural - thanks of course to talented and experienced teachers as well. I also was hesitant about the price, but now after finishing Q3 I think it was more than worth it. From meeting West-coast people with similar interests, to the wealth of resources that we get to keep, it feels like a good deal. They know what they are doing with sample classes, because I thought "Why not sit in, what have I got to lose?" but was hooked right away.

Aidan Rosswood: Just finished the third quarter and feel really confident in my Mandarin speaking foundation. It's gonna take a lot more learning to become really good but I now know all the foundations of grammar and speaking. The teachers here are AWESOME and the class is a blast plus it keeps you accountable and on track to keep moving forward. If you want to start learning Mandarin, start here.

Katie Mangan: This class was so amazing! It was hard work but my Chinese improved more then I ever expected. The teachers are amazing, they make class so fun and always around to help and answer questions even outside of class! I highly recommend this class if you want to begin learning but aren't sure where to start!!

Daniel Cook: 3 quarters of class and 7/8ish months later, I'm actually so impressed with how well my classmates and I are able to speak Mandarin. I never thought that I'd be able to learn this much at this speed, but the teachers and curriculum are absolutely outstanding. If I could learn other languages using the exact same classroom format and lesson structure, I'm sure I'd hop on those right away as well. Seriously, 20-30 person classrooms have nothing on this! The teachers are extremely friendly and helpful, and do their best to make sure you are learning effectively. If they had a Q4 class, I would surely sign up for it...

Lauren Khoo: It’s been such a fun, enriching, and effective experience to learn mandarin with ExcelMandarin. I’ve just finished the Fluency series of 3 terms. I’m so impressed with the progress I’ve made in a relatively short time and the enjoyment I get out of every class. The instructors care personally about everyone’s goals and progress and they foster a fun class environment. Also, I really liked the relationships and sense of community I gained with fellow students. EM has been a great part of my year. Between the homework and the classes multiple times a week, it is a time commitment, but it’s worth it if you want to learn!

Melanie Kong: EM's teachers are the best! Learning another language can be really challenging and vulnerable, but the teachers truly care about each student and create such a welcoming, fun, and supportive environment. I just finished Q3, and 8 months with EM has made me feel more confident in Chinese than years of schooling in other languages.

Livvie Lin: , but definitely worth it. Their approach to teaching - focusing on speaking, lots of practice in class, tailored toward what would be most practical for most people - has enabled me to progress faster in learning the language than I would've been able to in other programs. On top of that, my teachers and classmates are funny and enjoyable to spend time with! I'm continuing on to the intermediate conversation class because I'm excited to further improve my speaking fluency and discuss more interesting topics with classmates.

Caleb Lin: were more effective than years of Spanish study through high school. The instructors are uniformly talented and are deeply committed to their students and to the art of language pedagogy. The curriculum is thoughtfully constructed and is concentrated on the most important aspects of oral communication. I managed to handle the coursework while also maintaining a full-time job, and I imagine that if I were able to commit even more of my energy to the classes, my Mandarin would have improved even more. I cannot recommend ExcelMandarin more highly.

Chris LoCasto: I had an awesome experience studying Mandarin at ExcelMandarin. Having just finished up Q3, I'm really happy with the progress I made. All of the homework, articles, and vocabulary tools you get access to provide a solid structure for learning, but the real secret sauce is the instructors! We had Darren and Eco instruct us for Q3 and not only did they explain things really well, they made class a lot of fun to attend. I'm honestly really glad I decided to learn Mandarin here and can't recommend it enough.

Kimiko Medlock: Finished all three quarters of ExcelMandarin, and it was 100% worth it. Would do again. Three things worth mentioning: the low student to teacher ratio makes a big difference, the teachers are very professional and care about your progress, and they offer a huge number of tools to help you learn throughout the courses—for example HackChinese and DuChinese—that are effective. Love this school and would recommend

Donna Lee: Taking the Q3 classes at EM was the obvious choice for me after learning so much with Q2 and the Q3 session did not disappoint. I felt that my speaking and listening improved so much. It was fun being able to have discussions with the others students, using Chinese in complex sentence structures. The curriculum is well organized and the teachers are amazing. I felt that the individual feedback for the homework and quizzes were so helpful and when I had questions, they always responded so quickly and thoroughly. The Q3 classes were great and definitely pushed my fluency to a higher level.

Nicholas Walls: I completed Q1-Q3 with Excel Mandarin in 2022. This was a great learning experience, and I left the class feeling empowered to speak Mandarin in real world scenarios and ready to continue my learning. The classes ultimately focused on expressing thoughts and feelings, and opinions on everyday work, life, and hobbies. The teachers were really great, and I always felt supported in learning at my own pace, with a good push as well!

Gabriela Claravall: After finishing three quarters at ExcelMandarin, I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I've made. Q3 has given me the knowledge and tools to discuss my opinions and ideas. I think that all the teachers are very kind and amazing. They really care about the students learning, and I even got to meet some teachers from ExcelMandarin in person which was really nice, and felt very personable. The teachers in Excel Mandarin are all so passionate about students learning and I’m really thankful that I joined ExcelMandarin. I’m happy for the teachers I met in ExcelMandarin. I hope to keep in contact with the EM community.

Mary Kathryn: I've had such an amazing experience with Excel Mandarin! The teachers are so helpful and patient, the curriculum is aimed towards conversation and expression which I love, and the workload is challenging in a way that pushes you forward! I always enjoyed classes with my awesome teachers and classmates. I've just completed Q3 with Excel Mandarin and even though extra business in life kept me from focusing on it as much as I would have liked, I feel excited and well-prepared for continuing on in improving and growing in my Mandarin skills. I've tried to learn with other self-teaching methods in the past, but never thought fluency would be possible for me until these classes! So grateful for this school!

Ted Meyer: I joined excel mandarin in september 2021 because my girlfriends family doesn't speak english, and I had no way to communicate with them. I was super impressed with the teachers and curriculum, and having a 1:4 teacher:student ratio made getting in-class speaking time actually possible, and even fun. I finished all three terms of classes and feel so much more confident now when speaking to my girlfriend's family!

Laima Liljeberga: I couldn't have asked for a better place to study Mandarin! I can't believe how far I've got through these three quarters, myself a few years ago probably wouldn't have believed that I would be speaking/understanding so well in such a short time. The time and money investment is definitely worth it. The classes not only put the learned grammar into practice but are very fun and entertaining therefore make the learning process very enjoyable!

Hugo House: what do users think?

Heather A Adams: This is a lovely place to write and engage with other writers to develop your craft. The classes are pretty awesome and so diverse. There’s a lot of ways to enage and participate which makes finding yourself in the literary space a lot more easy, or at least more interesting. The space itself is great with modern and updated touches that belie its humble roots. I look forward to more interactions with Hugo House.

Morgan Wallace: Seattle's literary salon!

J M: Closed due to "autonomy."

Steven Vroom: A resource for writing

Wendy McMillan: Always an amazing experience, Suzanne Morrisons class was just what I needed before finishing my research in Glasgow. Look forward to more classes when I get back.

F Dalglish: A writer's community to write with and for.

M B: I think it's a very clever idea. One issue I've found in general is that to fit in you have to be a football player - I like the idea that you don't have to be a jock to find community. This is a great idea!

Paulette Pennock: Nice Environment...Clean & Friendly Staff🌟 The Place feels Cozy & Safe🌟

ELS Language Centers - Seattle: what do users think?

田中隆祐: From January to March in 2016, I studied at ELS Seattle. I loved teachers there. I learned a lot of things from great professors. Thanks to ELS, I’m working as an English teacher in Japan.Ryus’ke

Ines N.: . You can go to the bathroom on your 10 min break after the listening section, and they also have a “break room” with drinks and snack machines. Be aware that you can’t bring anything with you to the exam room, only your identification

Sujai Sairajan: I had to reschedule my exam due to an unforeseen work emergency and I must say that I am glad I got in touch with the right person. Adiba from the ELS Center in Seattle was extemely understanding in helping me out get out of this issue by getting an approval to reschedule my test so that I dont have to got though the hassle of canceling and registering for the test again. She provided valuable inputs about the documentation that she needs to get this approval done and also very forthright about the chances of it being done, even though eventually she did get it done for me. Kudos to her and the staff at ELS Seattle that always strive to help out candidates who are in need of some sort of help!

Geraldine Hinojosa Lozada: I studied at ELS Seattle in 2012/2013 and It was the best experience of my life, I made really good friends, I learned a lot and I really enjoyed the city. It is an amazing place with amazing teachers and people to study and improve a new language.

Aichen Liu: Thank for helping correct the address and get my transcript back.
