I was in the hospital for 3 days and he checked on me twice a day; even one day when he was scheduled off. When I returned home for my recovery I had to call him several times and he always promptly returned my calls. As one of the other reviewers stated, when you are in his office he makes you feel as if you are his only patient. My knee has since recovered; I am pain free and able to resume my normal activities. Steve Edlund: Dr. Downer is an exceptional surgeon. I have had both of my hips replaced by him with the first hip replaced in 2011. After both procedures, I experienced minimal pain and was released from the hospital on the same day of the surgery. Within seven days post surgery, I was walking unassisted without a walker, crutches or a cane. Also, within a few months after my first hip replacement I was able to enjoy activities such as hiking and biking, and of course, very much look forward to the same quick return to my recreational activities after my most recent surgery. Prior to surgery I had watched a handful of his YouTube videos to educate myself and I recommend any patient do the same. Almost all of your questions will likely be answered in the videos. He doesn't have the same dog and pony sales pitch at your first appointment that some doctors have. Simply put, he is likely the best doctor in the world for hip resurfacing and you are lucky if you meet his criteria to be in his patient group.The respect he had from the operating room staff was obvious as well. All that said, he does not strike me as a doctor that is going to coddle you and if that is what you need, keep looking. I would put myself at 90% recovered. After one month I began a "down to the studs" DIY house remodel project. After 2 months I began playing pickleball. I did not do any PT, but instead let my daily activities be my rehab. The hip feels like my original hip in every regard, except no pain now.
